Well, the boy was told to call 911 in an emergency, when he needed help, so that's what he did! |

Hi Jamie,
Yeah, the boy was so cute and the operator was very patient. Curiously, isn't it illegal for someone to call 911, but actually nothing had happened? Will the policemen punish those who do so if they are adults? In this case, the boy was too young to be responsible for his behavior, but will his parents be punished? _________________ Today is a gift, that's why we call it the present. |

Infin1ty, it is illegal for someone to call 911 when there's no emergency, but of course no one can expect a 4-year-old child always to understand what is an emergency and what is not.
If an adult reports a false emergency to 911, he may be fined or prosecuted, but a lot depends on the situation and how busy the police are. In some neighborhoods of the larger cities, where many people have chosen not to get much education, some of the 911 calls are really crazy, as a paramedic friend of mine has told me. He said that one time a woman called 911 saying that her son wouldn't open his eyes. What really happened was that the mother had been trying to discipline the boy, and the boy said he would keep his eyes closed until she let him do what she wanted to. Instead of disciplining him properly, she just called the 911 paramedics, and of course there was nothing they could do about the situation.
In my city, the dispatchers weren't allowed to tell the paramedics over the radio that a call was obviously frivolous and not to answer it, so instead, if a call was fraudulent, the dispatcher just announced the call and made a noise like a turkey. This was a signal to the paramedics to answer a true life-or-death call before they went to the frivolous one.
In Detroit, the police are sometimes so busy that they won't answer a call unless there is a fatality. A policeman in a neighboring city, to which many people migrated from Detroit, told me that his city had a problem with former Detroiters reporting shootings and murders when the real problem was just a racoon in a garbage can, or some other minor nuisance. His city eventually had to start enforcing the penalties for false alarms, which they had been very lax about before. |

| Yes, Mitchell, it's very obviously a true story. We can hear that those are definitely not actors. |
