India has defeated Pakistan. Pakistan has been defeated by India.
Both the above sentences mean the same. One uses has and the other has been
John has killed George. George has been killed by John.
Same is the case with the above two sentences. _________________ Non-native speaker of English

Hi Vinay Garg,
Your question about 'has' and 'has been' needs to be looked at first from the point of view of tenses. In its simplest form 'has' is the Present Simple of 'have' and 'has been' is the Present Perfect Simple of 'be'. In its different functions the verb 'be' can be used to make continuous forms of tenses and also the passive form. 'Have' in one of its forms is used as an auxiliary to make the Present Perfect Simple.
Here are some of the uses in action:
Have
Charlie has a house in London. Present Simple.
Charlie has lived in that house for 10 years. Present Perfect Simple.
Be
Charlie is a a home owner. Present Simple.
Charlie has been living in the same house for ten years. Present Perfect Simple.
Charlie has been taken to hospital. Present Perfect Simple Passive.

Hello Alan
I have learned different names for the tenses you mentioned. Could you please shed some light on these?
1) Charlie has a house in London. [b]Present Indefinite tense.
2) Charlie has been living in the same house for ten years. Present Perfect Continuous tense

. I too have not heard the term 'present indefinite', Tom, but I see from internet sources that it is a subset of what we call present simple. I don't think that it applies to sentence #1 because Charlie owns the house 'now' only. 'Present indefinite' seems to apply just to what we also call 'universals' or timeless events that always occur: Dogs bark at night. We see with our eyes. A cow gives us milk. The children go to school every morning.
Regarding #2, I think Alan was just in a bit of a rush. #2 is indeed present perfect progressive (or continuous). . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

. The second is more American when we speak of possession. The second can also mean 'obtain'. . _________________ Native English teacher at Mister Micawber's |

You could learn quite a lot if you started to do some of the exercises.
And then, if you don't understand something, you could ask pointed questions instead of a few random ones. _________________ No comment |
