There are two meanings of "snail mail"
1) letters or messages that are not sent by email, but by regular post;
2) slow speed

"Snail mail" doesn't mean slow speed. When something is moving slowly, we say it moves at "a snail's pace".

"Snail mail" means exactly what Kitosdad said it does. We call ordinary post "snail mail", because compared to e-mail it's very slow.
