Please could anyone tell me what some English word is to express the activity that people post a new saying they have something to sell or they want to buy something like articles on a newspapers or on the internet. I've found some words but I do not know which of them is mostly common and makes sense.

classified advertisements; classified ads; small ads; personal column

Thanks,

Anna

Hi Anna,

If you're speaking of the internet, I'd probably say 'post a classified', and if you're referring to newspapers I'd say 'place a classified'.

Personal columns are reserved for romantic interests.

Alternatively you might hear 'post/place a want ad' (for somebody who is wanting to buy a particular item).

Classified advertisements and classified ads are the same thing, 'ads' is just a shortened form of the word 'advertisements'.

You would probably hear a BrE speaker refer to them as 'adverts' instead of 'ads' or 'advertisements'.

I think that the term 'small ads' may also be more of a BrE term, but the concept is still the same as 'classifieds'.

In a newspaper, there's a section of the paper (typically the last few pages of the paper) that is called the 'classified section', or often just 'the classifieds'.

I think the term is used as well on the Internet. I don't know that there's a separate term for online classified ads.

There is at least one particular site that springs to mind, called "Craigslist", that is a giant independent source of classified ads, but I think most classifieds on the internet are just the online versions of their respective newspapers.
