Does it make sense 'My Expectations to Taipei International Flower Expo'?

Hi eveyone,

I join an English contest, and the sponsor give the competitions a Chinese topic of the speech. I try to translate it to English and make it to be likely what native speakers can get used to speak. Could you check out the topic name for me? Which one is much better?

Actually, it is a very formal speech. I suppose to speak it in the public in front of many bosses of officials. So I think the terms should be very formal as well. Am I right? In addition, the Chinese topic means what I am expecting for the 2010 Taipei International Exposition. It sounds like what I would like to see for the exposition. Please help me out.

1. A day at the 2010 Taipei International Gardening and Horticulture Exposition.
2. A day at the 2010 Taipei International Gardening and Horticulture Expo.
3. A day at the 2010 Taipei International Gardening and Horticulture Exhibition.
4. My Expectations to Taipei International Flower Expo.
5. My Expectations to Taipei International Flower Exposition.
6. My Expectations to Taipei International Flower Exhibition

Hi Maggie,

If it is supposed to be a formal presentation, I would not use the 'Expo', but rather the full, more formal term of 'Exposition'.

As for the choice of 'Exposition' vs. 'Exhibition' the two are synonyms, so I don't think it makes any difference between them. However, if the official name is the Taipei International Exposition, then you certainly want to use the word 'Exposition' in the title of your speech.

Thus, you can eliminate choices 2,3,4, and 6.

However, #5, should say "My Expectations for the Taipei International Flower Exhibition."

Also, a 'flower' exposition isn't quite the same as a 'gardening and horticulture' show. Does the official title in Chinese say it's a "flower" or "garden and horticulture" show? Again, I would advise sticking to the same words as the official title. If the official title doesn't specify flower versus garden/horticulture show, then you've got some freedom to work with your title.

Judging by the title you've translated from Chinese, I think any of the following would work.

If the official title labels it as a garden/horticulture show:
A Day at the 2010 Taipei International Gardening and Horticulture Exposition. (Your #1)

"My Expectations for the Taipei International Gardening and Horticulture Exposition"

"Personal Expectations for the Taipei International Gardening and Horticulture Exposition

If the official title labels it as a flower show:
My Expectations for Taipei International Flower Exposition. (Your #5, with the for/to correction)

"My Expectations for the Taipei International Flower Exposition Exposition"

"Personal Expectations for the Taipei International Flower Exposition Exposition

Let us know the full, official title of the Exposition in Chinese, and we can make further suggestions from there.

Well, I actually don't know what's your meaning of "official title labels ". But I would like to explain something to make you understand more. Then you can help me better.

1. I can see the website of the exposition, http://www.2010taipeiexpo.tw/mp.asp?mp=4

You can see the title of the website which is on the most top of the homepage. "2010 Taipei gardening and horticulture exposition". I actually see some papers that the related public departements publish. They use "2010 Taipei gardening and horticultre exposition". So probably I need to use "2010 Taipei international gardening and horticulture exposition".

2. My actually question is that how to have a title about "what I expect for this exhibition". I would like to write down the full title of the speech name in Chinese. I think it may help me better and people who can speak Chinese and English can help me more probably.

The Chinese title is "我對2010國際花卉博覽會之期許。". Hopefully, someone who know both Chinese and English can help me out as well.

I've visited the website but don't see "我對2010國際花卉博覽會之期許。". Maybe I've missed it. I don't know. You may tell us more about what "我對2010國際花卉博覽會之期許。" is about actually, its content, I mean.
So far, I guess Skjrej's suggestion "My Expectations for the Taipei International Flower Exhibition." should be a good one.

Actually, so far, this completed title I only can see from the related papers about the English speech in Chinese. But there is no English title for the Chinese title which is correspond to them completely. "2010國際花卉博覽會" I can see it in English on the website. My question is that how to traslate "我對...之期許" in English.

And now I'm trying to memorize the title for my speech. I hope I can memorize more. But I'm thinking if "A DAY AT THE 2010 TAIPEI INTERNATIONAL GARDENING AND HORTICLUTURE EXPOSITON" is fine. Because if I change the title, I should memorize it again. I am really not good at memorzing things. Ha. But if the tile "A DAY AT THE 2010 TAIPEI INTERNATIONAL GARDENING AND HORTICLUTURE EXPOSITON" is not okay, I'll try to change myself absolutely.

I have another question is that can I say "expo" in the content of the speech but not for the title of the speech. "expo" means "exposition".

By the way, the speech will be held on May 8th.

Hi Maggie,

I think your title of "A Day At the 2010 Taipei International Gardening and Horticulture Exposition" is fine, if a bit long. Take a deep breath before you begin to say it!

I think the difference between 'Expo' and 'Exposition' isn't important. Since the website seems to use the word 'Expo', I don't think you can go wrong by calling it an 'Expo' in your title, or your speech.

Yes, Skrej. I really need to take a deep breath before I begin to say the title. In fact, I pratice it for more than 30 times only for the title. I actually have no idea how to say it more naturally. But I try to say it and would you please give me some suggestions or just show it for me? Because I don't know if there is any rules for saying a LONG title.

A DAY AT THE 2010 TAIPEI INTERNATIONAL GARDENING AND HORTICULTURE EXPOSITION.

1. I try to break down the title using the blue one to tell it.

2. I'll try to use captial for all of the alphabets for title. I'm not sure if it's okay?

(Please correct me if I think anything wrong.) And I think it's really not easy to say this lolng title for only breath for JUST one time, is it?
