Paint-ball is for folks who can't handle a real gun. Most Russians are trained to use the best firearm in the world, the Kalashnikov AK74. Because in countries like Germany nobody is allowed to use firearms you have invented toys like paint-ball shooting and other funny activities.

What you're saying, then, is that instead of having fun playing a paint ball game, Russians enjoy themselves by shooting each other with Kalashnikovs.

Westerners believe it means "cheers". Literally it means "to your health".

Means "Cheers!".

..........

To Claudia: sorry, didn't see your reply.

Interestingly, in Russian "Na zdorovye" is never used this way, i.e. it's not followed by "to", as in 'Cheers to something'.

To Cookie:

There's some truth in what you say, but I personally think that the Kalashnikov is for sissies who can't handle true weapons. What can be better than a good old mano-a-mano with swords and shields? I mean, those who actually survive have so much fun! Eh...

Oh, puh-leeaaze. The Kalashnikov is far from the 'best' firearm. It's an ugly, cheap, inaccurate gun that any 12 year old can pick up and use as well as a professional, highly trained soldier.

It has two virtues.

1) It's cheap to make.
2) It's rugged.

It's a weapon designed to be used by troops with little or no training, at short ranges.

For those reasons, it's the most widespread combat rifle in the world.

It's notoriously inaccurate, what it lacks in accuracy it compensates in volume of fire. Hence the moniker 'spray and pray' (spray down the general area you're shooting at with as many bullets as possible, and pray one of your bullets hits the actual target.)

I have to wonder if the AK is any more accurate than a paintball gun.

So, if by 'best', you mean mostly widely used in the world, then yes, I suppose so...

Otherwise, there are far better weapons out there.
