.
It is usually singular, Amna-- 'I got up the nerve to call'. It means, 'I finally emboldened myself to call', 'I finally summoned the courage to call', and is common in casual conversation.

'I can't get up the nerve to ask her for a date / sign up for the TOEFL test / go bungee-jumping.'
