Thank you :)
I know that it sounds natural but one of my friends insists on 'I am born in ... (town)'. I am interested in if it is at all possible.

No, not really. I was born, is the only natural manner of saying so.

I am born, could never be considered as grammatically correct.

"I am born" is incorrect because it refers to the present time. You were born years ago and "am" suggests that you were born today which is incorrect.

"I was born in (place)" is the correct and common way of saying this.

Ex:

"I was" born in Europe and was raised by my grandparents.

Where were you born? I was born in Jamaica

Hope this gives you some sort of an explanation and clears any confusion you have.
