what is the meaning of make for.

I am making for route 30, is it near home.

can we use it in conversation like in america

make for (inseparable): go to or toward.

"Her teen-aged children are always hungry. As soon as they arrive home from school, they make for the refrigerator."

It is a common phrasal verb, but its use generally implies some effort, energy or difficulty involved in moving toward the (usually physical) goal.
