Today in my American city I saw a woman from another country wearing a T-shirt that in big sparkly letters said "MISS" across the front.

I thought it was a somewhat whimsical shirt meant to advertise the fact that she wasn't married yet.

After a few hours I realized that in non-English-speaking countries, the word "miss" is used to mean a beauty contest winner, so that's probably what people thought the shirt said in the country where it was produced.

In the United States, we have Miss America, Miss USA, etc., but if you call someone a "miss", it just means she's a young girl or woman who's not married. It's like calling her a maiden.

I think same openion is here in India. Any girl will not show much restraint if any body calls her Miss. in fact she can just give you a sweet response that she is not a Miss. But If you call a lady Mrs. and she is not married...............then possibility is that she can shout on you.

But mainly its Miss is used only for bachelor /young/ teen girls.
