Do the following sentences make sense? Can someone please suggest better ones?

Assume we were in a car.

1) A big truck sped across in front of us.
2) A big truck came from the side, cut in on us and sped right ahead.

They make sense, but they're not equivalent.

#1 suggests that you are driving down the road, when the truck approaches from a perpendicular angle and speeds by in front of you. In other words, you narrowly avoided the nose of your vehicle hitting him in the side of his truck. (We call this a broadside or t-bone collision.)

#2 suggests that the truck was traveling in the same direction as you, but suddenly appeared by your side, passed you, cut in front of you, and sped forward. In other words, you narrowly avoided the nose of your vehicle colliding with the rear of his truck. (Referred to as a rear impact or rear end collision.)
