Phrases: "out of the blue" and "out of my league" #1 (permalink) Wed Apr 29, 2009 10:57 am   Phrases: "out of the blue" and "out of my league"

Hello everyone,

Now let me give you an example. I thought he was out of my league, but he developed a crush on me. It was out of the blue.

I'd like to know what 'out of my league' means? I thought 'out of my league' means 'one is mismatch with another one', but someone tells me that 'I out of his league means I'm better than him'. Is it correct?

I looked up 'out of the blue' in the dictionary and found this phrase usually functions as adverb. So, is it correct to say: It was out of the blue?

Many thanks. Smile

Are you trying me today? Laughing

Coming "out of the blue" means coming out of nowhere, unforeseen, unexpected.

Being "out of someones league" means usually that he comes from a different background, or that he has a very different lifestyle, or that he moves in different circles.

As an example; if I was a fishmonger and you were to be a Professor at University, you'd be far out of my league.
