TOEFL® essay: Would you rather be self-employed, work for someone else, or own...

Some people prefer to work for themselves or own a business. Others prefer to work for an employer. Would you rather be self-employed, work for someone else, or own a business? Use specific reasons to explain your choice.

To be my own boss would be a great idea, but there are different arguments why I would not try to establish my own business, nor be self-employed. To start up a business you have to do a big investment, therefore you probably have to take up a huge bank credit. Moreover if you have your own business or are self-employed you have a risk about your monthly income and you never know how much you have to work for this income. That means you don’t have regular work times.

I could not handle the pressure of taking up a credit, if I don’t know whether I can pay the monthly rates. Every day in the news one can see how many businesses close these days. The financial crisis influences all branches around the world. I rather prefer a clean slate than owning a business with a high credit.

I need a regular income. I have to pay the rent of my apartment. I need money for the insurance and gas of my car. I want to benefit from my hard work. As a self-employed you never know how much money you will earn for your efforts in the end.

When I come home from work I have several other commitments, for example the soccer club I go to two times a week and my family that need my support, especially my old grandma.
I have to be reliable for them and I could not be reliable if I don’t know when I finish my work.

Nevertheless there are not only disadvantages of being self-employed or having a business. You are your own boss that means you set your own rules. You can come and go whenever you want. You will get all benefits and your tasks will not become monotone. You rather will have different projects in different areas. As an employee you normally have more or less the same tasks every week.

All in all I rather avoid the uncertainty of being self-employed or owner of a business than handling all this risky business. I know what I get at the end of the month and I know what I have to do for it. Maybe I not earn any benefits for my work but I will get a better salary and position if I work hard anyway.

I liked the question, but unfortunately you can't choose the essay's topic in Toefl.
My performance unfortunately depends on the topic. :-/
