If somebody is in your way, what's the polite way of asking them to move over? (Is the use of move over fine here?)

A simple, " Excuse me " should always suffice.

Not really. You shouldn't need to use anything else, although on odd occasions if I am carrying a heavy parcel and someone is blocking my way, I will say, " Coming through." That usually works. Smile

Mind your backs (with an optional please) is more polite. Move over is more forthright and likely to be used in a more official capacity - police crowd control for example.
