Political correctness (PC) is the difference. The politically correct term is "dwarf" or "little person".

"Midget" is not politically correct.

PC is okay in a few cases -- calling blacks in America "African Americans" instead of n*****s is maybe the best example -- but it also weakens us in many ways. I playfully refer to PC as the pussification of America. PC assumes that everyone is thin-skinned, cannot take a joke, etc.

There was a town about 60 miles northwest of my hometown: Hurley, Michigan. Their high school's mascot is the Midget.

To whom is that offensive? And if it is offensive to someone, should we all be forced to give up the freedom of speech just to appease the offendee's thin skin?

PC says yes. I think that people should grow a pair and learn to laugh.

Here are some terms and their PC definitions:

Fireman/firefighter
Retard/Mentally challenged person
Man or Woman/Person
Cracker/Caucasian American
Indian/Native American

etc.

Clinically speaking, the difference has to do with the proportions of the head and appendages in relation to the height of the person.

A midget has the same proportions of head, leg, arm, torso, etc. sizes as a full sized adult, only scaled down.

A dwarf has disproportionately sized body parts relative to their height.

And on an almost eerily related note, this just in:

Mickey Carroll, one of the last surviving diminutive "Munchkins" in the 1939 movie "The Wizard of Oz," died of natural causes on Thursday in Missouri at age 89, a newspaper reported.

Note the story is dated from about the same time as the original post, down to the hour. Coincidence?

In dwarfism the arms and legs stop growing in childhood, but the body and head continue to grow to adult size, or close to it.

As Skrej has mentioned, a midget is just a very small person with normal proportions.
