A resume is a shorter, briefer summary of your skills and experience.
A CV is a longer, in depth and more detailed report on not only your skills and experiences, but all applicable awards, honors, publications, etc. It's like a running journal of your professional life.
A CV gives all the specific details, while a resume summarizes.
You're supposed to keep a resume to one page, two at the maximum, while there's no limit on CVs, which are considered a bit thin if they're not over two pages. _________________ Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.

| A resume is an American English term. In UK English "CV" is the norm. A CV can be a simple summary of qualifications, skills and experience or an in-depth analysis. |

Adrian, you are incorrect. Skrej is correct. A resume is much, much different to a CV, even in the UK........ One who has been there!

Kitosdad, I am not incorrect. From one who was born there, applied for jobs there, worked there and hired people there! - for both American and British organisations. I have never submitted a "resume', nor ever requested one.
Take a look at this link. It explains what I have said in great depth:
http://www.greatcvs.co.uk/ResumeVersusCurriculumVitae.html
The summary is as follows. You will note that under the UK section a resume is n/a (not applicable) - which is quite correct from a native English speaker's perspective.
United States:
CV An involved listing of credentials including honors, presentations, publications, affiliations, et cetera, which details each achievement or experience Typically many pages (can eventually exceed 20 or 30) Usually used in science and academic fields Not easy to "scan" Résumé A summary of achievements, accomplishments, and credentials highlighting most important elements " Typically 1-2 pages Usually used in business fields Easy to "scan"
United Kingdom, Europe:
CV Any document regardless of length that provides a prospective employer or client with information necessary to hire an individual Can be used in any field Résumé n/a
The choice therefore is not between correct and incorrect - rather between American and UK English. There are very many differences and this is one of them. |
