Infinity, in England we have only two references to your question.
Car Park.
Multi-storey car-park. ( Which can be above or below ground level. )
OK, before someone corrects me,
Under-gound car-park. Call it three if you want to be finicky. :) :)

You would simply use the term garage, rather than parking garage. A garage is an enclosed, private space to park one car or a few cars and normally forms part of your property. You can own or rent a more remote garage - often referred to as a lock up garage. A garage also describes the place you take your car for maintenance and repairs.
Actually a 'parking house' ideally describes a garage, but it is not a term used in English. |

Adrian, he's referring to the big multi-level parking garages, not the small individuals home owner's personal garage.
Infinity, you can call them by either of the names Kitosdad mentioned, or you will also hear parking garage and parking structure used in America.
Less commonly used are a parking ramp, and a parking deck. I think these are more exclusive to regional parts of the US.
I don't think the term 'parking house' exists. I was waiting to see if any of the BrE speakers used it, but it seems like it's not used in either BrE or AmE. _________________ Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.

How on earth can you tell that from the question? Parking house is not used in BrE. |

Adrian, stop being so touchy. It is Skrej's opinion. Infinity will decide which she thinks is correct.
Anyway, I have never heard the term " parking house " and I'm probably a fair bit older than you my friend. _________________ Keep it simple. Keep it interesting. |

If you'll re-read my last post carefully, that's exactly what I said, too. Parking house is not used in BrE. Check the words in red, which are mine.
Don't you find it somewhat odd that two of us interpreted her question in exactly the same way, as asking if 'parking house' was a synonym for 'parking garage'? And that we both told her 'no', supplying her with several various synonyms, each according to our variant spoken?
We can tell from her question, because we're familiar with Infinitiy's previous questions and posts, which demonstrate that she's a rather proficient English speaker, and unlikely to be making the base mistake you assume she's making. _________________ Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.

I find your reply odd. I'm not being touchy, merely explaining the use of the word garage as it relates to parking. I have never heard the term parking house either - so what is your point? |

I don't need to re-read your post. You said you were waiting to see if any of the BrE speakers used the term 'parking house'. I was merely confirming that it is not used in BrE.
Don't you find it somewhat odd that two of us interpreted her question in exactly the same way, as asking if 'parking house' was a synonym for 'parking garage'? And that we both told her 'no', supplying her with several various synonyms, each according to our variant spoken?
I didn't interpret it any differently. I supplied synonyms too without contradicting any of the previous answers - simply adding to them.
We can tell from her question, because we're familiar with Infinitiy's previous questions and posts, which demonstrate that she's a rather proficient English speaker, and unlikely to be making the base mistake you assume she's making. |
I haven't assumed, stated or implied that Infinity has made any mistake at all. I have just explained the use of the term garage as it relates to parking. I don't see that it is obvious whether the question applied to individual (garages) or en masse (car park, parking lot, etc) parking arrangements. |

Thank you very much, guys. What did I get out of your replies were:
A Parking lot is an open area at ground level where many cars can park, and A parking structure (also known as parking garage) would be a type of building with several levels.
A car park is a parking lot and a car Park and a multi-storey car-park is a parking structure.
Parking lot and car park, parking structure(garage) and multi-storey car-park, all the terms are correct. The only difference is which side of the Atlantic you are referring to.
A garage is an enclosed, private space to park one car or a few cars and normally forms part of your property.
Parking house is nonsense. :) :) _________________ Today is a gift, that's why we call it the present. |
