TOEFL essay: Parents should make important decisions for their older teenaged... #1 (permalink) Sat May 09, 2009 11:52 am   TOEFL essay: Parents should make important decisions for their older teenaged...

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents or other adult relatives should make important decisions for their older (15-18 year old) teenaged children. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Decisions should always be taken by those who are affected. Everyone should know what is good for him. Although parents have more experiences and they are more reasonable and mature, kids should be allowed to take their own decisions to a certain degree. Of course this depends on the kind of decision and what this decision is about. Furthermore one has to considerer that some Childs at the same age are more mature than other.

Parents should support their kids. The experience parents gained within their life should be used to support and consult Childs. Parents got their own experience by doing mistakes and even if this was painful sometimes, everyone has to learn things by themselves. Therefore parents should not decide what their children should do or not, even though the parents already know the child’s decision may be wrong. Support and consult is better than constraints and force.

Everyone has his own life and everyone should know what he wants to do with it. Some kids are more mature than other and this should be considered by the child’s parents. Some fifteen year old Childs behave like eighteen year old and vice versa. If some kid is already able to take his own decision than let him do so. If not, then take more influence on his decisions.

You cannot say in general what a important decision is. Some parents may think to decide what kind of sports their kids do is important, or what kind of friends their kids have. Other may think that the education of their Childs is a important question. In some cases it might be good when parents let kids not take painful experiences and lead them to good education and behavior. Especially when their Childs are not reasonable. Other decision like the ones mentioned before are less important and parents should ask themselves whether it is necessary to interfere. For example a kid should be allowed to choose his own friends.

All things considered I can say that as a rule kids should be allowed to decide their own life. However this is a difficult question and you can’t answer this question for all Childs in the same way. It always depends on the child and his development and education. Sometimes it might be necessary to take decisions for kids, even if they don’t like it.

I am actually contented with my essay this time, i hope you too. Thanks for taking your time to correct my essay. Nicoo

Nic, don't be dismayed by the " red ". They are only minor corrections, and your essay was pretty good, not good enough for you to be satisfied mind, but good. You are developing very well, and I hope to see even better results from your next essay.
I know you are capable of very good work. Just a little more thought required.
