Punctuation: Putting a comma before any form of address is a well-known rule... #1 (permalink) Sat May 09, 2009 16:34 pm   Punctuation: Putting a comma before any form of address is a well-known rule...

Hello,

Putting a comma before any form of address is a well-known rule in writing. That being said, why does nobody lay this often misused twirl in their introductory line, as in 'Hello, Julia...', but they'd rather type 'Hello Julia...'?

Kindest regards

Sorry I was replying to another post, or so I thought. Back to your question :-

I think that it has fallen into misuse as you rightly say, probably because it comes across more like someone answering the telephone, " Hello, Julia?"
whist " Hello Julia " imparts a sense of continuity, as in speaking. Just my pennyworth.
