Hello, please help me choose the correct adverb for: THE LUNCH LOOKED............. a) badly b) beautifully c) awfully I think it should be "awfully" but i can't explain why is that.
thanks! |
As others have stated, none of these are correct. All 3 are adverbs, and adverbs can only modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. Thus, these 3 would have to modify ‘looked’, which doesn’t make any sense.
You need an adjective,

Yes, but not to refer to the verb. An adjective used after a verb has to refer back to the subject. The verb also has to be a linking verb.
As a quick test of whether a verb is a linking verb or not, replace the verb with a form of the ‘to be’ verb. If the meaning remains the same, it’s probably a linking verb.

As I just said, you can have an adjective after linking verbs, as long as the adjective refers back to the subject. This structure is referred to as a predicate adjective. _________________ Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.

| Thanks a lot to everybody, especially to skrej! I've learnt that some verbs can be linking ones so we can use adjectives after them like after "to be" and they are predicate adjectives then. |
