Good morning Pm,
Got ... to have, possession:-
I've got a headache, ( I have a headache. ) I've got a car. ( I have a car. ) I've got a feeling. ( I have a feeling.)
Got is a word I avoid using wherever possible, preferring to use have. _________________ Keep it simple ... Keep it interesting. |

Of course there is. My point was that "got" can, in most cases, be replaced by " have ".

Yeah, buy some Cortisone for that. hehe
"Got" is used redundantly and/or for added emphasis in the "to have" conjugations... as has been previously shown:
- I've got a dog = I have got a dog = I have a dog.
But... there are some real -- non-redundant, non-add-on -- uses for "got":
1) Taking possession:
- I got a dog today.
- I got my pills yesterday.
- I'm getting a Wii system tomorrow!
- I get (recieve) food stamps each month because I can't seem to find my work boots. ------
2) Comprehension/learning of something:
- I get (understand) that you hate me, but you could at least brush your teeth before saying it.
- I got the point as soon as you uttered it: you like horses. I must (I have to/I've got to) say that I'm not surprised, given your equine smile. ------
Crap, I forgot where I was. Somebody HEP a brother!
Okay, whew, never mind. Ugh. My stomach has GOT (emphasis, nothing else -- "must") to stop squirming!
-----
3) Stand-in for "to be" conjugations:
- I am going to get (be) fired tomorrow.
- He got (was) fired yesterday.
- We got (were) screwed! That was clearly a foul!
Those are three solid uses of "get/got"... having nothing to do with the use for emphasis or the redundant use. _________________ Billie Jean is not my lover. Hee. |
