I really don't understand why they failed and not missed?

Hi,

'They failed to find' means they didn't succeed in finding. 'Missed' wouldn't make sense in this sentence. 'Miss' followed by another word usually has the sense of regretting that you don't do something any longer as in: When we moved to the town from the seaside, we missed going swimming every day. You will see also that after 'miss' in that sense the verb is in the 'ing' form.

Now, I want to ask off the topic question which I'm still confusing.
Could you reveal the meaning of this sentence, "I can can acan in a can shop".
I don't understand why the old teachers uses it when they mets fresh teachers.
