TOEFL essay: Some people believe that education should be available to all studen #1 (permalink) Thu May 21, 2009 16:35 pm   TOEFL essay: Some people believe that education should be available to all studen

Some people believe that a college or university education should be available to all students. Others believe that higher education should be available to only good students. Discuss these views. Which view do you agree with? Explain why.

To decide whether attending to a college or a university should be possible for all students or only for good students isn’t easy. There are several aspects for both views. On the one hand if only the good students attend to colleges and universities they build up a kind of elite. They will become high educated graduates and good scholars. On the other hand if all students have the possibility to attend to colleges and universities it is more just to all people in the society. The group of good and not so good students will mix up and they will build a heterogenic group instead of a homorganic group. This will improve the soft skills of all students.

Small elites can push the envelope. In the past only a few very well educated scholars invented and researched things which pushed the envelope in areas such as technology, medical care and industry. Therefore all people in a society take advantage of single scholars. What supports the idea of allow only good students in colleges and universities.

Too huge classes prevent good education. Imagine a class with more than 100 students and practice groups with more than 30 students. That would prevent the good students from getting better but probably encourage the normal students. The effect that would take place is that this creates a medium average of knowledge. Neither the bad students would get intelligent nor the good students would be supported and nobody would use their potentials.

Shouldn’t anyone have the right of education? Some people say that education is one of the fundamental human rights. If one let not attend all students to colleges it disabled large parts of the society to get access to education.

A heterogenic group supports different values. A heterogenic group prepares students to the real life. In their later positions in companies they won’t find homorganic elite group of people. There will be different people from different societies with different point of views. To be able to handle all kinds of persons is one of the main skills today. In view of the necessary teamwork in more and more companies and jobs it is also necessary for good students to learn to be respectful and responsible and to build up a intercultural competence.

All things considered. I think it is necessary to let all students attend to colleges and universities. Nevertheless it is still quite important to consider that classes will not become too big and that a program for excellent students will be established.

Finally the forum is online again. Seems as you had some connection problems within the last days...
Thank you for correction and comments.

TOEFL essay: Some people believe that education should be available to all st #2 (permalink) Fri May 22, 2009 11:50 am   TOEFL essay: Some people believe that education should be available to all st

The decision as to whether attending a college or a university should be possible for all students, or only for the better ones isn’t an easy one.

There are several aspects for both views.

On the one hand, if only the good students attend colleges and universities they build up a kind of elite. They will become highly-educated graduates and good scholars.
On the other hand, if all students have the possibility to attend colleges and universities it is more just and fair to all members of society.

The group of good and not so good students will integrate and they will build a heterogenic group instead of a homorganic group. This will improve the soft skills of all students.

Small elites can push the envelope. In the past, only a few very well educated scholars invented and researched things, which pushed the envelope in areas such as technology, medical care and industry.

What supports the idea of only allowing onlygood students into colleges and universities?

Too huge classes are a barrier to a better education. For example, imagine a class with more than 100 students, and practice group with more than 30 students.
This state of affairs would prevent the good students from progressing, but would probably be of benefit the normal students. The effect of this scenario would be to create a mean-average of knowledge. Truly, the poorer students would progress slightly, but at an horrendous cost to the better students.

Shouldn’t everyone have the right to a first-class education?

Some people say that education is one of the fundamental human rights. Everyone with the ability to do so, should be permitted access to the very best teaching establishments. To deny this right is to penalise a section of society, and is grossly unfair.

A heterogenic group supports different values. A heterogenic group prepares students to face the real world. In their later positions in companies they won’t find an homorganic elite group of people. There will be different people, from different societies, with different points of view. To be able to handle all kinds of people is one of the most important skills required by management today. In view of the necessary teamwork in more and more companies and jobs, it is also necessary for good students to learn to be respectful, and to be responsible and to build up an intercultural competence.

All things considered. I think it is necessary to allow all students to attend colleges and universities. Nevertheless it is still quite important to accept that classes should not be allowed to become too large, and that a program for excellent students should be established.

Nic, a difficult essay, but a well thought-out one. Your last sentence gives me trouble though. Are you suggesting a seperate programme be formed only for the better students?

Hi,

your comments showed me again what is possible and how I can improve the quality of my essay. Hopefully I'll learn through it.
However I am not quite sure due to way you commented my essay what are corrections and what are just improvements of my essay.
I would appreciate it and thank you a lot if you could mark my mistakes seperately next time, but only if this isnt claimed to much. I am aware myself that your corrections are still a favor and that you are doing this in your free time.

I tried to point out in this essay that all students should be allowed to attend to colleges and universities and that a special program only for the good and better students has to be established. This program should prevent that the better students would not use their whole potential.

Regards
Nico
