redecorate: present simple or progressive #1 (permalink) Sat May 23, 2009 12:16 pm   redecorate: present simple or progressive

Hello,

In class we stumbled over the following sentence:
Dan is sleeping in the living room while we redecorate his bedroom.

The students had to choose the correct form from a list (sleep, is sleeping, has slept, does sleep) to fill the gap, which wasn't too difficult, but why is the simple form "redecorate" used in this grammar task? Unfortunately, the sentence didn't occur in a text but without any context. I can only imagine that "redecorate" refers to the future as part of a time clause or are the students supposed to avoid two progressive forms in the same sentence?

Thank you for your help.

Gromit, I would think that both are present continuous.

Dan is sleeping (now) and he will continue to do so for some indeterminate time.

Decorating is taking place (now) and will continue for some indeterminate time.
