79. Is it more important to be able to work with a group of people on a team or to work independently? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer.

Since time immemorial, people have had different approaches when confronting the tasks in front of them. Throughout our history we have heard about heroes who achieved something working alone like Achilles in Greek mythology, and groups who accomplished something worth working together, like English soccer team Manchester United. Keeping in this train of thought, I would say that both independent and team work are significant, but if I have to choose one it is clear that understanding how to work with a group of people is much more important.

First of all, I believe that we all can work independently. We use to work alone all the time. For example, right now I am writing this essay all alone without anybody’s help. Moreover we all have some daily work which we usually do without assistance of our friends or colleagues. For instance, quite often, in the office we write reports or develop new software solutions alone. Furthermore, at home we prepare breakfast and clean our apartments without maid’s assistance. These examples show that anybody can work independently, but the main question arising from this is: “Are we able to produce quality result all alone?”

Secondly, working in a group can show us are we able to make a joint effort with our friends or colleagues in order to present something more then we are able to do individually. Working with different people can be challenging, because sometimes we have to accept other people views and opinions. Our view is not always the right one and only if we are working in a group we will be able to control and develop our emotions and knowledge. For example, quite recently I attended the workshop on climate change negotiations. We had one example for practice in a group and my opinion had not received support by the others and I had been singled out. Individually I would solve that task completely different then team proposed but this example showed me that working in a group is not always an easy task.

In conclusion, I believe that we are all different and for that reason it is more important to be able to work on a team understanding different characters or attitudes than to work alone. The abovementioned arguments clearly show that we can all work independently but only some are able to adapt themselves with the requirements of a team work. Needless to say, people should always follow their own heart and choose whatever they consider to be the right choice.
