TOEFL® essay: In your opinion, what are the qualities of a good neighbor?

(Topic 15) Neighbors are the people who live near us. In your opinion, what are the qualities of a good neighbor? Use specific details and examples in your answer.

There are various characteristics and qualities needed for neighbors to be characterized as good neighbors. Nowadays people leaving there actual flats, apartments and houses more often than people did in the past. Therefore it is necessary for them to be very regardful. The relationship between two neighbors can vary for each pair of neighbors. It is needed for people to recognize what kind of relationship they want to have to their neighbors and what of course to recognize what they want.

All people want different relationships to their neighbors. Some people prefer to have a friendship with their neighbors while other prefer to have only acquaintanceship to their neighbors. Everyone should respect the wants of the other side and should not be too intrusively.

The people’s leisure time activities influence the relationship between two neighbors extremely. For instance if you have a neighbor who likes to have party every weekend at his/her place and you prefer a quiet and relaxing weekend you might have a problem with that. Imagine that your neighbor likes to spend time with animals such as dogs. They might be loud, run through your garden or leave their residuals in front of your home as well. However if you share all these interests with him/her you probably have a quite good relationship to your neighbor.

The neighbor’s character is important as well. If a person is reckless, regardless and unfriendly there is no way to prevent to encounter with him/her, especially if he/she is your neighbor, because you cannot really avoid your neighbor. You apparently live at the same place. In contrast if a neighbor is friendly, quite, watching out for your belongings while you are at work and so on he is a good neighbor to me.

In the nowadays people are moving from place to place and town to town. Therefore it is necessary for them to check the local habits and customs. Every new region you move to will probably have their special customs and habits. For instance small villages still have their breaks at noon, where all shops close and people want to spend some quite time. To play loud music or do tasks in your garden would certainly be the wrong time. Thus good neighbors try to know the robes of a particular town or place.

All things considered a good neighbor is a person that has a good education and a decent character. The relationship to a neighbor can grow to a friendship if wanted and if you have something in commin with your neighbor. However, paying attention to your neighbor’s opinion about neighborship and his/her wants is quite important.

This is probably my last essay before my TOEFL exam on Saturday. Hopefully it fulfills the requirements for a good essay. :) As usual this essay's topic is chosen by change and not intentionally.

I am still kinda frighten due to the test, although this is normally not my habit. Maybe it is because I just want to have an acceptable result so much, haha!

Nico, I did a full edit of this essay for you a few minutes ago, and like a fool I somehow managed to delete or lose it.

Anyway, it is too long and too late to repeat it now. In a nutshell, try to avoid this topic like the plague. The necessary repetition of the word neighbour makes it so difficult to avoid the whole essay becoming boring very quickly. Just read through your text.

I did manage to eliminate quite a few of this word, but not without having to also drastically alter the text.

Don't get too concerned about your exam. You are too clever a writer to fail on your writing skills. Don't rush it. Don't panic. Easy-peasy is the attitude to adopt.

Oh yes, I haven't noticed that while I wrote the essay. You are absolutly right, the word neighbor is already annoying after the first passage. :wink:
I'll bear that point in my mind for saturday.
