The error was: (b) middle

You have found the error but your entry is incorrect.
What would you say was the major income for young people starting work in your country?

Major wouldn't work here because it means greater and there is no comparison in the sentence. Average means in the middle/typical. Mathematically the average of 10,12,13,14 is 12.25
