English Grammar through Stories

G'day from this new member.
I've just read the "free sample" copy introducing the above referenced stories.
In the last paragraph of the sample I noticed that one of the sentences begins "They thought I would I go........."
The word "I" appears twice.
Question:- Should it have read ........."They thought I would go to pieces"
Or was it indicating the thoughts of "They" wondering.....would I go .......to pieces.? Just a thought. :)
