A capstone is also known in England as a coping-stone. It is placed as a finishing to a newly-built wall.
Ideally it should be wider than the wall, as its purpose is to protect the top of the brickwork from the rain. It's width allows any rain to fall to the ground well clear of the wall. That's the theory anyway.
