Usage of the word implement #1 (permalink) Thu May 28, 2009 20:44 pm   Usage of the word implement

Hi all,

This is Simmi from India.

Presently doing Masters in History........and preparing for civil Services Exam.

Basically wanted to brush up my English grammar.........

I just took a test and I don't agree with the answer.(I have checked it thrice)
Meaning 6

tool; instrument; piece of equipment
(a) implement (right answer)
(b) guideline
(c) empty
(d) equivalent

You can find the page here

I looked for tool in Wordweb(software for English Dictionary)
it says.......An implement used in the practice of a vocation

but when you search for implement it means.........Ensure observance of laws and rules
How can it be the right answer.....as it is not equipment!

(I couldn't take 8/10 score for correct words especially when you got 10/10, on two occasion........ my ego is hurt........just kidding. :)

I really wanted to know the logic behind this question's answer........
coz In a competitive Examinations.......every single question counts.:)

Looking forward to your answers......

Best regards,
Simmi.

The word " implement " is readily accepted in the UK as having both of the meanings suggested here. It is only differentiated by the context surrounding the occasion.
