Hello Namcy, thanks for your interest in the topic. It is NOT an officially recognised essay, just a little topic I thought about this morning.
Conscription was the compulsory induction of young men into the Armed Forces at the age of eighteen years. It was for a period of two years.
The idea was abandoned around 1960 due to cost-cutting by the Government of the time.
Maybe the majority of our present membership are too young to recall the event, but I'm sure Alan remembers it well. It probably is a futile request in hindsight, but I feel it would have made an excellent theme for an essay.

Please state advantages and disadvantages for the return of CONSCRIPTION.
Conscription (or draft) has, like all things in this life, advantages and disadvantages, all depending on how one looks at it.
As a mother, and a very much pacifist mother, I can’t agree with young people being forced to work with arms and heavy artillery. It goes against my very grain to see my son holding a gun or launching a grenade.
But in times like this there are many other things to be considered too. Like, what does a young man do who doesn’t have enough points to go to college? All too many of them now are looking for the few jobs that are available, and too many of them have to depend on their parents and the state just to survive.
The army offers the opportunity to learn a trade, or brush up on their education so they can go to college, depending on their signing up for so many years after boot camp.
Also, in the army the young men learn discipline; they get their edges rounded a bit so to speak. They learn how to keep order and how to have their own possessions organized.
All in all, this is a question that makes me feel torn in two. _________________ No comment |

That's the kind of response I was hoping for Andrea.
