My German is bad, but I have my doubts here... This excerpt is from a newspaper and I highly doubt they'd make a mistake, but I ought to ask...

Shouldn't the bolded word be 'dem' instead of 'den'?

Many thanks.

No, den is perfectly right there.

Du gibst dem Staat etwas.

Es kostet den Staat nichts.

I think it should be "dem", but others tell me it's "den". And?

Hi Dimitar, you need 'den' here because 'kostet' requires an accusative object. (I think in Bulgarian you probably use a dative construction.)
