What are the bizarre foods you've tasted? #1 (permalink) Sun May 31, 2009 15:01 pm   What are the bizarre foods you've tasted?

So what are the bizarre foods you've tasted? My list goes like this -

fried cricket - It's basically deep fried cricket served with thick tamarind sauce. For the very first time, I had to close my eye before i put it in my mouth to distract myself from not so inviting visual of what I was about to eat. After that, I felt like eating normal food. As for the taste, it's kind of crunchy and tamarind sauce makes it more flavorful.

spicy rat - This dish may sound funky to you but,in reality,I gotta tell you, it doesn't taste funky at all as oppose to you might think it would. It is a deep fried dish. Judging from the look and taste, meat is deep fried first and mix with saute onion and chili flakes. It is hot and taste exactly like chicken.

spicy fried frog - It seemed to me that this dish is also prepared in the same way as spicy rat. It is crunchy as well.

beetle dish - This is real funky stuff. I couldn't even brought myself to grab the spoon for second time. It is kind of a stir fried dish with beetles and some sort of leaves which I don't know the name. Taste is very strange at best.

ant salad - As the name says, it is ant salad with crushed ants, onions and green chili. Taste is kind of sour.

spicy fried quail - I don't think this one would be strange for most people. It's prepared like curry dish with potato and taste like other poultry meat.

fried coconut worm - This one doesn't taste strange but it does give me a weird sensation when I chew. These worms are fed on coconut before deep fried. So it's has strong coconut flavour.

fried lake worm - These worms are rare worm that live on green algae of lakes. According to locals, they can only be caught on full moon day as they came out from hideout at that time only. It's a deep fried dish as well and taste like dried prawn.

I know, for most of you guys, there are a lot of repulsive factors in my list and,to be honest with you, I did feel the same way before I'd tried. But, once I muster the strength and finally tasted it, they weren't taste that bad, except beetle dish,as they seemed to be.

Hello,

What an interesting topic! Well, I cannot contribute much as I haven't eaten any peculiar dishes from any cuisine. But it was very entertaining to read your story. Smile

By the way, where are you from?

My home country is burma. I'm an avid backpacker and have travelled a lot. I do whenever I could. I tried most of those dishes on my way. It's very interesting at best. You get to see as well as experience different things which you couldn't otherwise.

I don't honestly think I could ever get to be THAT hungry.

^^ Laughing I didn't try those just because I was in hunger pang. It was simply out of curiosity. Besides, sometimes, it helps me break away awkward moment of silence in social gathering. Mr. Green
