Present or past? (I went to India last year and had a very tasty dish I've never) #1 (permalink) Sun May 31, 2009 15:30 pm   Present or past? (I went to India last year and had a very tasty dish I've never)

When you are talking about the past and mention the process of something that is always true, what tense would be correct to use in that sense? For instance, in my other post, I talked about foods, their preparation and taste. Even though the whole event was happened in the past, the process of preparation probably stay the same regardless of when it occur.
Like for instance :
I went to India last year and had a very tasty dish I've never had. It is a roast chicken cook in savory sauce.
I went to India last year and had a very tasty dish I've never had. It was a roast chicken cooked in savory sauce.
Which one is better approach?

Another usage dilemma I'm having is, I'm still not sure when to use "of" and "from". Is it correct to say -
I got Political Science degree of Tokyo University. (In this, I'm using "of" in possession sense)
(or)
I got Political Science degree from Tokyo University.
Which one is correct?

In both cases, the second.

Thanks for your prompt response. So, the whole event must be portrayed in past tense then. For second problem, can you elaborate further why it is wrong to use "of" in first sentence?

You could only say from the University of Tokyo.

Your sentence was gramatically incorrect. Sorry.

You use from to indicate what is the source or provider of something.
The Tokyo University is the provider of your degree. Here are some verbs that are typically followed by from: beg, borrow, buy, come, elicit, extort, get, glean, inherit, obtain, receive...

So we must use past in every situation even it's true

Hello Basu
we use go when you want to leave to another area

I go to school everyday

I go to the church on sundays

we add the letters (es) with pronous he ,she ,it

i go but he goes

you go but she goes

this in presnt

the past of the verb go (went)

I went to the market yesterday (This means I did go to the market)

We use going for planning or arrangement

I'm going to London

This means i intent to go to london in future
