They lifted it from a song a German band had made in 90's.

Does the above sentence make sense? Does it mean they copied the song from a German band? Can lift be used in that sense?

Yes, you can use 'lift' in this sense. It doesn't necessarily have to mean a direct verbatim copy, but could mean loosely based on or inspired by also.

"Lift" in this usage basically means to steal. You see it in words like "shoplifting", which means to steal from a store.

That song was inspired by an old song Mozart had composed centuries ago.
