Good morning Alkamarain, it really depends on the circumstances when being used.
Sometimes either can be used.
" They have a small/little child."
" I only have a small/little pension."
" I have little time to spare in my busy day."
" He is a small-minded person."
I'm afraid you just have to learn them as you come across them.

Why not lighten the gloom a little by having them try a couple of tongue-twisters that you can find posted here. They are not only humorous, but you can have a new subject to discuss. Here are two to start them with.
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper Did Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers? If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?
Betty Botter had some butter, "But," she said, "this butter's bitter. If I bake this bitter butter, it would make my batter bitter. But a bit of better butter-- that would make my batter better."
So she bought a bit of butter, better than her bitter butter, and she baked it in her batter, and the batter was not bitter. So 'twas better Betty Botter bought a bit of better butter.
She sells sea shells by the sea shore. The shells she sells are surely seashells. So if she sells shells on the seashore, I'm sure she sells seashore shells
That should get them laughing and interested.
