When Jack and I finally traced the source of the sound we discovered that it was none-other than my favourite stewardess. God only knows how she had gotten so far into the brush. Maybe she had been left higher on the tide-line than I had, and had managed to crawl to where it was safe from being washed back out when the tide returned. Anyway, a quick inspection revealed that she had what looked to be a broken leg. Nothing else appeared to be damaged.
" We had better find something to splint that leg," said Jack. " Yes you're right, and we need to build some kind of shelter before nightfall, and a fire to keep away predators too," I answered. We soon found two suitable pieces of wood to splint her leg, and as she was still unconscious it was an easy matter to set the leg straight without having her scream out in pain. I was quite pleased with the job that I did on her leg. It should mend quite well with any luck at all. " OK, now to build some kind of shelter," said Jack. We left her where she lay and started to gather whatever we could find to build a shelter. There wasn't much around, but we built a long tent frame and covered it with large palm leaves. This should at least protect us from any rain that might fall. The temperature was fairly high, so there was no need for any other form of protection. We went back for the girl and found her still unconscious, so I gently lifted her and carried her back to our makeshift shelter.
" Right Jack, you find enough wood to last for some hours, and prepare a fire. We don't need to light it until dark, but get plenty just to be sure that it lasts. I'll scour the shore-line and see if I can find anything of use." " OK Tom, but be careful. I've no idea where we are, except that it's along way from where we should be," said Jack. I set off along the beach and scanned for anything that might have been of use to us. It wasn't until I had covered quite some distance that I saw anything, and then I saw a seat from the plane on the waters edge. As I got closer I felt sick when I saw the obvious impressions of shark's teeth-marks in the upholstery. Poor sods ! Now I knew the fate of the other passengers. We'd been really lucky to have made it to the beach alive. I decided to return to camp as it seemed futile to continue my search, but in the hopes of finding some fruit I thought I'd return through the brush. This was when I saw the marks of many boots and the indentations of heavy boxes. Someone had obviously been here just recently and I was curious as to just who that might have been. I didn't know it then, but my questions would be answered pretty soon, and they would be answers that I wasn't going to like. My return journey to camp provided us with a good deal of fruit that I picked on my way, and Jack was really happy to see it. We were both still hungry and set about the fruit with gusto. " Hey, don't forget the girl. She'll be starving when she wakes," said Jack. " You're right. Let's put some aside for her then. We can collect more in the morning, no problem."
Darkness was falling and the girl started to groan. " Get the fire going Jack, she's coming round, and she'll be terrified to find herself in the dark with two strangers." He hurriedly did my bidding, and soon had a good fire going. When I looked at the girl she had lapsed once more into a deep sleep. I took this opportunity to tell Jack about the observations that I had made further along the beach. " Well, that could be a good sign. Maybe we can have a trip deeper into the brush at daylight. It could be an expedition of sorts, and they will be sure to have a radio-transmitter Mate. We can radio to be taken off this place." We decided to get our heads down for the night, so we banked up the fire, and stretched out to sleep.
I was rudely awakened from my slumbers with the feeling of something sticking in me. Opening my eyes I found that I wasn't mistaken. A little guy in uniform, with a long rifle and bayonet was smiling down at me. " Good morning Amelikan swine" he said. Time to go walkies.".....................
