Kit Daemon. Chapter 1 (Sitting at the bar, alone as usual, I smelled her perfume) #1 (permalink) Sun Jun 07, 2009 18:35 pm   Kit Daemon. Chapter 1 (Sitting at the bar, alone as usual, I smelled her perfume)

Sitting at the bar, alone as usual, I smelled her perfume long before I heard her voice.
" Hello Kit, long time no see," she purred.
Without turning around I replied, " What are you doing in a dump like this Veronica?"
" Well Kit, I've been in most of the dumps in town searching for you, and I've struck lucky at last."

This didn't strike me as being lucky. Every encounter that I'd ever had with Veronica usually ended up with someone being killed, or at least hospitalized for a very long time.
" Listen Veronica, whatever you have in that coal-black mind of yours, I'm not interested. I've got a job now, and I'm making good money, so no thanks to whatever you have to offer."

" Really Kit, is that any way to greet an old friend."
Old friend ? I'd rather snuggle up to a rattlesnake as have this dame as a friend. She was trouble with a capital T.
I'd known many guys who had fallen for Veronica's womanly charms, and most of them were dead and buried.
" How many times would you like me to say it Veronica, I am not interested."

"Come on Kit, I'm sure that two hundred and fifty thousand pounds stacks up well against your two hundred pounds a week security guard job," she said softly.
Two hundred and fifty thousand pounds! My brain did the math, and she was right, but there was no way that I was going to let her see that I was sorely tempted with this offer. My next words surprised even me, " Make it half a million and I'll give it some serious thought." Had I really said that?
" Done", she said before I had time to even blink.

"Now," she said, let's go somewhere a little more private where we can discuss our arrangements." I hastily finished my drink and followed her out of the bar to a large dark Daimler saloon that was parked at the kerbside. As we got near to it the rear window slid open and a familiar face smiled out at me. It was " Big Al," the penman. The last I'd heard of him he was doing time in Strangeways for forgery, and had been sentenced to ten years for his efforts. Ten years!
They say time flies, and it had, but he didn't seem to have taken his time inside badly. He looked fit and affluent. Prison must be really good nowadays
" Good evening Kit, come here in the back with me where we can talk in private."

My mind was racing. This was my last chance to walk away from this deal, but the lure of that half a million pounds was too strong to resist, so I lowered my head and settled onto the back seat.
With an almost silent purr the window slid closed...
