I think I might have heard it in a political speech once or twice, but in every day life, no.

Hi SkiIucK,

It's a word used most often in connection with expenses and is used in an official sense. Take the situation in which your employers ask you to travel on business and stay in a hotel overnight. Naturally you would not be expected to pay for this yourself. They will therefore provide you with some money in order to defray the expenses or simply pay for the expenses you have had to meet.

Hi,

For the record it's worth mentioning that there is only one language and that is English. Different countries have their variations of English but it still remains one language.

You will often hear the company will defray all the expenses. I think the word is derived from the French one "défrayer".
