Settling back in my seat I looked around the spacious interior of the Daimler. It was huge and extremely comfortable. This car must have set Al back quite a packet of dough. Seeing my inquisitive glances Big Al laughed out loud.
" She's a beauty isn't she Kit? Set me back a cool forty thousand pounds, including VAT he laughed.You'll be able to buy yourself one soon when we finish this job."
" Just a minute Al. I said I would give it serious consideration, not that I would do it," I said.
" Listen Kit, this job is a piece of cake. It only requires nerve to pull it off, and I know that you're not short in that department."
" OK, let's just say I go along with it. Is there going to be any shooting involved?"
" Of course not. This scam will make us famous, but we will have to read about it from distant lands. Kit, we are going to get Stentor's jewellers to just hand us a three-millions pound necklace, and they'll even escort us to our car with it."
" And just what are we going to do with this necklace if, and when, we get it?"
" Relax Kit, that part of the deal is the easy part. We have a buyer already lined up for it, and he'll pay a cool two million cash for it. He's even paid the three million required to pull of this scam up-front. All you need to know is he's called Mr.M. He's a Canadian, living in Japan, and he fronts as an English tutor out there, but he's the biggest international fence in the entire world. The money is guaranteed and the job is a push-over. It will be a three-way split. One million for me, and half a million each for you and Veronica." At the sound of her name she turned around from the front seat and smiled at me,
" Well Kit, are you interested now?"
This sounded too good to be true, and you know what they say about such things.
" Maybe, but let me hear the plan first."
Again Big Al laughed out loud. " No dice Kit, you are either in or out. Make up your mind, and make it up fast. We have other people to approach if you turn us down."
" Well, can I at least have overnight to consider it," I asked.
" OK Kit, but we want your answer by 9 am, or we find another guy."
Handing me a card he said, " Phone this number in the morning at nine sharp. Don't be late. We don't have to use you."
" Then why did you come looking for me if that's the case," I asked.
" Because Veronica says you are the only one she would work with, and her role in the scam is vital. Now get out of the car."
They left me on the pavement with my mind in a whirl. It all sounded good, and the half million made it sound even better, but I knew Veronica and Big Al, so getting the necklace wasn't going to be the only thing I had to be considering. These two were like vipers. Turn your back on them and you would be a dead man before you had even started counting your half million.
