Difference between 'have' and 'have got' and 'has' and 'has got'? #31 (permalink) Wed Jul 08, 2009 8:32 am   Difference between 'have' and 'have got' and 'has' and 'has got'?

Hi,

English speaking persons use to say to me when I wonder about things like that that my English is so good :-( I know they are lying. I have looked at a few more treads like that and it is the same sort of discussion in all of them . :-) I also know that the use of have got and so on differ if you speak American language or English as they call it :-) I have got a new bike , and sentences like that are more common in British English.

I have seen in a grammer book that in American language they use gotten.

Hi, Maria,

Americans use "Gotten" as a participal 2(V3), but not in the present tense. As in:

"I could have got that job" and "I could have gotten that job"

Hello, Maria, and Privet, Natasha,

Actually, Americans would far more likely say, "I coulda gotten that job," which may not technically be "correct," but is very, very common. Still, it's best to stay on the intelligent side and keep your English flying at a high level, regardless of how in past decades it's become simplified on both sides of the Atlantic. And, in regards to sounding intelligent, please refer to Natasha's answer above. She hit the nail on the head...

Hope that helps.

yes -- in the US, "gotten" is used more often than "got" as the participle:

1) She has gotten her groove on. (yes -- splitting the verb in the process. lol)
2) He would have gotten (been allowed...) to go if not for the fact that he was sick.
3) I have gotten the point in each of your previous lectures, but this time you're speaking Greek.

Good morning Rodolfo, yes you are. If I were to use got, I would, in most situations, affix a time.

"but we cannot say " I got a car" in present time?"...... You can say this, but I wouldn't.
I'd say, "I have a car" or "I've just bought a car."

Kitos.
