But I think it must be meant something else in this context:
Her father used often to hunt them in out of the field with his blackthorn stick;but usually little Keogh used to keep nix and call out when he saw her father coming.
Can you explain it to me,please? _________________ "Never judge a book by its cover..." |

Dear Tamta, I would translate this as meaning :-
The children would hide from their Father who would search for them. Silence was paramount in the game, but little Keogh would give out a shout, thereby revealing their hiding place.

I'm not familiar with the term, but Google states that it's a term meaning to keep watch or post a guard.
Supposedly has its roots in old English boarding school slang.
Good luck reading Joyce. He can be difficult to bear with even for native speakers. _________________ Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.

The term is similar to another one in Slovene "nič", which means nothing.

| Meaning of the phrase 'would you like...' as in 'would you like a coffee'? | Phrase: "Did she called you?" |
