Kit Daemon. Chapter 3. (As the Daimler sped away I still had the feeling that...) #1 (permalink) Wed Jun 10, 2009 17:19 pm   Kit Daemon. Chapter 3. (As the Daimler sped away I still had the feeling that...)

As the Daimler sped away I still had the feeling that things were happening far too quickly. The flashing neon lights from a nearby bar drew my attention and I quickly crossed the street and entered into it's smokey atmosphere. At least it was warm in here and there were plenty of vacant tables at this late hour.

I ordered a drink and took it to a corner table. Sitting there I recalled the last time I had gotten involved with Veronica on another scam. That time it had been the old " Night safe not working" scam, and had netted us a few thousands in cash, and a lot of worthless cheques. Veronica and I had gone our seperate ways after that job, and I'd not seen her since, until tonight. That was three years ago, but it seemed like only yesterday. She certainly was a real-cool operator. Even when the Police had flagged us down she had been able to talk our way through the road-block. Yes, she was cool, calm and dangerous, with a capital D.

So, what was I going to do? Continue in my boring job as a security guard for two hundred pounds a week, or throw my lot in with this pair of rogues and hope to come out of it with half a million quid and my life? The money sounded real good, but in spite of Big Al's assurances, there was bound to be some risk attached to this job. The thoughts of leaving England was appealing though. It was approaching Winter and the days and nights were cold and dank. The thought of sitting somewhere warm and sunny with a stack of cash nearby was the final decider ............ I'd do it.
I downed my drink and left the club. It was late and I decided to get some shut-eye. I could usually get by with a couple of hours sleep, but I decided that I had better be wide-awake in the morning, so no more drinks tonight.

My room was drab and musty, and my mind slipped back to my plans for living in warmer climes. I'd buy a small apartment, somewhere near to the beach, with a few bars and eateries at hand. The money left over would see me through many years just as long as I didn't squander it.
With these thoughts drifting through my mind I slipped into a much-needed sleep.
