The clatter of the milkman's wagon woke me from my slumbers.
It was 6 a.m. and I rolled out of bed and splashed my face in the bathroom sink. Donning my track-suit bottoms, T-shirt and trainers I set off on my usual morning five-miler. Normally this took me around forty minutes, but today the thoughts of the coming day added wings to me feet and I was back at my apartment in less than thirty five minutes. I showered and shaved, and selected my only decent suit from the wardrobe. Looking into the mirror I thought just how badly I needed to spend some time in the sun. Too many late nights working the security job had taken it's toll from my usual healthy appearance.

It was now 7.30 a.m. and I had enough time to visit " The Greasy Spoon " for my morning breakfast. I had a feeling I'd be needing it.
Leaving the cafe I walked slowly up to the point where Big Al had dropped me off the previous night. It was a few minutes before nine and I stood smoking a cigarette to pass the time.

At 9 a.m. I dialled the number they'd given me and I wasn't surprised to find Veronica answering my call. Obviously she and Al had an " arrangement ", so this reinforced my intention to pay particular attention to their movements after we got paid-off on this job, that is if the job ever got off the ground.
" Good morning Kit," she sounded alert and anxious for my answer.
" What have you decided, are you in or not?"
" Yeah, count me in, that is if this plan has any chance at all of succeeding."
" Don't worry about that Kit dear, it's a solid gold cert to go smoothly. Big Al spent the best part of ten years dreaming it up. He's covered all the bases, and all it takes is nerve. That's why I opted for you to be the third man."
" Thanks for the vote of confidence. So, when do I get to hear about this wonderful no-risk plan?" She gave me an address in an uptown part of the city and I hailed a passing cab and headed there...
