I'll give Big Al credit. He certainly knew how to live. The apartment was an eye-opener. I shuddered to think just what the rent on this place was costing him. Probably more than a years salary for me,and that was for just one month's tenancy. I rang the bell and the door was opened by Veronica, much as I had suspected it would be. Big Al was sitting by the window, still in his dressing gown. I think the intention was to leave me in no doubt as to just who was running the show here. I was the lackey and he was the boss. Personally I didn't give a damn who was in charge. Once I'd gotten my pay-off I wouldn't want to be seeing either of them ever again.

" Take a seat Kit. You want some coffee,?" he was playing at being a gracious host, but he wasn't too good at it. He looked completely out of place in this setting, but Veronica, she looked right at home surrounded by all of this luxury. For a brief moment I remembered that time in Belfast when we had netted a small fortune with an audacious scam, and had spent the rest of the week having a great time spending a good part of it enjoying ourselves, but that was then, and now was a different time and a different ball-game.
This was to be my last job. The job that would land me on my feet again, and allow me to forget about ever having to work again.

" How things Kit?, asked Al. " Veronica tells me that you have a job in security nowadays." If it was his intention to belittle me, I had no intention of letting him do so.
" Can we get down to business?" I replied." I've got better things to do than sit here discussing my present activities. Either we talk about this wonderful plan of yours, or I'm walking out right now."
" Whoa, keep your hair on Kit boy, all in good time."
I rose from the sofa intent on leaving, but Veronica barred my way.
" Al's right Kit, let's just relax and we'll get right to the point."
She gave Al a withering glance, and I could feel his discomfort. This wasn't going at all well in his opinion. He wasn't used to people talking down to him, but he needed me, so he swallowed his anger and forced a sickly smile.
" Veronica's right Kit, let's calm down and talk about this like friends." Friends was the last thing I wanted to be with this snake, but I sat again and looked him straight in the eye.
" OK, then spit it out. We're wasting time."
I lit a cigarette without asking for permission, which I could see angered Al, but amused Veronica. To hell with him . If I was vital to this mission then I was going to enforce some rules of my own, and smoking whenever I liked was one of them! I sat back and waited in silence...
