Kit Daemon. Chapter 7. (Finally the big day arrived and I once again found...) #1 (permalink) Fri Jun 12, 2009 17:47 pm   Kit Daemon. Chapter 7. (Finally the big day arrived and I once again found...)

Finally the big day arrived and I once again found myself climbing the stairs to Big Al's apartment. This was it, no backing out now.
I rang the bell and Veronica opened the door. I say Veronica, but this was a Veronica I'd never seen before.Somehow she had put twenty years onto her age. She was wrinkled and tubby. Where there was once dark shining tresses there was now only a dry bleach-blond hairpiece in it's place. The transformation was terrific, and I myself would never have recognised her in the street. Big Al was also suitably disguised wearing a bald toupee applied over his greying thatch. He'd added a moustache and dark brown contact lenses to complete the transformation. I was staggered by the change. They both smiled at my obvious amazement.

" Good eh," said Al." Had you fooled didn't we. Imagine the description that old Stentor will give to the police after discovering he's been scammed."
" Right Veronica, give Kit what he needs and let's get moving, it's almost three. And Kit, don't forget, when we leave the shop, you wait thirty minutes before making your move. Timing is crucial. Thirty minutes, not a minute sooner."
Veronica donned a beautiful sable coat over her dress, and Al struggled into a very expensive Crombie overcoat. I had to admit that they both fitted their parts well. I hoped I could do my part without fluffing my lines.
They left the apartment, and from the window I watched them drive away in the Daimler.

Ten minutes to three. They would be there at three o'clock, so I'd have one last cigarette and be on my way too.
After soothing my craving for nicotine I left the apartment and descended the stairs, this time leaving from the rear entrance.
The car was were they said it would be. I climbed in and gunned the motor. The engine purred like a kitten, and there was plenty of response when I pushed the accelerator. I took care to keep within the speed limit, and I was in my appointed position by three-ten. The Daimler was parked in front of the shop, and I smiled as a passing warden paid no regard to the fact that it was parked on yellow lines. Money talks in some quarters!

Through the plate glass window I could see them both talking to old Stentor, the owner.
He was smiling broadly, and falling all over himself to please these apparently very wealthy customers. Inside the shop the story was slowly unfolding...
