It seems so prevalent, the resistance to giving up the G-T Method!

Even well-intentioned individuals and teachers do NOT seem to understand that U just can't acquire language via the written form; and even the most stubborn must overstand by now that before we read and write in any target language, we have to be able to at least hold a meaningful conversation with a 9-year old.

Online ESOL courses are virtually meaningless and at best they can serve as a low dosage supplement.

" even the most stubborn must overstand by now "

I don't quite overstand what you mean. What do you suggest I do to help me overstand?

Kitos.

The stubborn are those who refuse to give up on the notion that an academic approach is viable when it comes to acquiring L1, L2, L3, etc.
So, my suggestion is to throw out any textbook series or written forms of language as a means to "teach" L1 to newborns and L2 to those who are new to the language.

However, if U are one of the stubborn adherents to and of the GT method (and its many masked henchmen) and to the aforementioned notion, then overstanding is virtually unreachable, ... but a non-virtual LAT course would probably do the trick (http://tesol-edu.org/ICLA_Curriculum.html)

Kiitos (for the opp to respond).

For those of us who never heard of the term 'overstanding'.

The Distinction between Overstanding and Understanding is a matter of "authority". If you can use something or do a job, you understand and memorize enough to act. In order to innovate or redesign, you must overstand. Understanding can Drive the car, but Overstanding Builds it, (or replaces it with something better). The difference between Under and Over standing is the difference between Oper-ating and Cre-ating. Understanding does the Job, Overstanding wrote the Business Plan. It is similar to the distinction between Academic "Knowledge" and Experiential "Wisdom". Overstanding emerged as a word from the global hip hop culture, to help portray an ethic of entrepeneurialism , self sufficiency, and sustainability.

Taken from http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Overstand

And btw: 'U' is a letter, not an acknowledged word in proper written English.
Here in these forums we use the proper word 'you', thank you.

Oh, it's an advert! Sorry Pettter, now I overstand.

Kitos.

Is it similar to a standing-ovation?
