And now dear readers I'm afraid I must keep you in the dark as to just what Kit's part in the scam entailed, suffice to say ; He left the shop with the suitcase full of money, leaving old Mr.Stentor anxiously biting his nails.................. To continue;

I climbed back into the car and slowly drove down the street. My instructions were to go immediately to Al's apartment with the money, and I knew he would be having me watched to ensure that I did exactly that. His suspicions were not without foundation, as I had other plans, plans that had cost me every penny I had saved doing that miserable job as a Security guard, but I was beginning to think it had all been worthwhile. This was my chance to come out on top, and I had planned every detail over and over in the many lonely hours I had spent in my dingey bed-sitter.

The small Hillman Imp which was discreetly following me was never going to be a match for the motor I was driving. I headed slowly through the streets in the general direction of Al's apartment, and when I had the opportunity to do so, I ran a red light. The Hillman was three cars behind and the cars in front of him obediently stopped at the red signal. He had no option other than to do the same.

I sped ahead and turned in to a small alley and quickly parked. Jumping out of the bigger car I transferred myself and the suitcase into a Mini that I had hired two days earlier. The Hillman raced past the alley, and the driver paid scant attention to the Mini I was now driving. He had other things on his mind!
Heading in the opposite direction of the speeding Hillman I headed for the motorway. My destination was many miles North of here, and I knew that Al had little chance of finding me. Even Veronica would have no idea were I was heading.
After many hours of driving I finally arrived in the tiny village of Gilsland, where I had earlier booked a room at a small inconspicuous hotel for several days.
The manager warmly welcomed me and showed me to my room. After a brief exchange of pleasantries he left me to my own devices. Locking the door I hoisted the suitcase onto the bed and opened it.
Three million! I couldn't believe I'd gotten away with it. It had all gone like clockwork. My nerves started to kick in just around then, so I went down to the bar and had a couple of whiskeys.
The barman was a good talker, and listening to his banter had a calming effect on my nerves. The restaurant was just starting to serve meals, so I sauntered in and took a table by the window. The views were spectacular, and I felt the remaining tension slowly ease from my body. Three million! I chuckled inwardly when I imagined what was happening just now in Big Al's apartment.
He and Veronica would not be happy people, but they really shouldn't have any complaints. The job had gone just as Al had planned. All that was missing was Mr.M's three million pounds. I wondered how upset he would be.....
