'won't he?' vs 'isn't he?' #1 (permalink) Thu Jun 18, 2009 9:13 am   'won't he?' vs 'isn't he?'

Q. Kubrick is going to be nominated to receive the Academy Award for best director, __________?

a. won't he?

b. doesn't he?

c. didn't he?

d. isn't he?

I am confused between 'a' and 'b'.

'd' seems correct, but is it probable that because 'is going to' may mean 'will', 'won't he?' is correct?

'won't he?' vs 'isn't he?' #2 (permalink) Thu Jun 18, 2009 9:22 am   'won't he?' vs 'isn't he?'

Hi,

You have to follow the exact verb form of the main verb when you construct the question tag. In other words the underlying meaning doesn't matter. In your sentence 'is' remains the important word and that has to be repeated by 'isn't he?' I accept that 'is going' suggests future but in order to create the question tag 'won't he?', the main main would have to be 'will be nominated'.
