Tense confusion: Discovered and corrected several incoming bookkeeping errors... #1 (permalink) Wed Jun 24, 2009 1:34 am   Tense confusion: Discovered and corrected several incoming bookkeeping errors...

The following are a few sentences found in a resume. While the tense is not necessarily consistent, are the sentences incorrect?

"Discovered and corrected several incoming bookkeeping errors, accounting for revenue that would have otherwise been lost."

"Collaborated with a computer programmer to devise an elaborate job tracking program, which required critical and creative thinking." (Later there is a sentence similar to this in which the writer said "requiring" instead of "which required." Perhaps this is an example of tense confusion in itself.)

"My attention to detail greatly reduced the number of production and invoicing problems, resulting in improved cash flow and revenue."

"Deciphered coating specifications, converting them into internal procedures providing simplified instruction to the production team."

"Contributed to leadership meetings targeted to motivate employees."

"Demonstrated my ability to learn by mastering numerous and diverse roles at this company."

Help with tense confusion in resume #2 (permalink) Wed Jun 24, 2009 4:06 am   Help with tense confusion in resume

Based on my cursory reading, all of the sentences are completely correct except this one:

"Contributed to leadership meetings targeted to motivate employees."

It should be:

"Contributed to leadership meetings targeted to motivating employees."

"To" here is a preposition, so it has to be followed by a noun form. "Motivating" is a gerund, i.e., the noun form of the verb, so that would be more correct.
